Challenge

The challenge was to build an online channel with $1,000 capital and my experience to sell sports braces online.

Having a keen interest in sport. I noticed there was a gap in the market for good quality sports braces and training equipment. Connecting with Austrlian suppliers I was able to provide an online platform for keen sportsman like myself to buy quality products.

Solution

Use the WooCommerce platform with a purchased template as the basis for the online store.

WooCommerce is a great Ecommerce platform with great functionality as it uses the WordPress platform. This made it a cheaper alternative to the bigger and more expensive platforms out there.

Building The Business

Starting Athletic Braces

Athletic Braces was solely going to be an online business utilising drop shipping. My suppliers all had the functionality to take my customer orders and fulfil them. Saving me the need to house or carry inventory.

The suppliers were carefully selected. I chose to use Australian suppliers to ensure quality to my customers. 

Initially, I did all the work to get the channel setup. Later on I built a small team to support critical components of this business.

The business was a success during the COVID period. Lockdowns in Australia meant that people were taking their workouts to the home. Unlike other online distributers, we didn’t increase our prices. 

Website design

Doing It Cheap

With limited start up capital, the website build and maintenance needed to be cheap. The WooCommerce platform was selected for its great functionality, ease of use and the lack of licensing fees most big Ecommerce platforms come with.

With the platform selected, I sought to purchase a template from the various marketplaces for WooCommerce. Using a template as the basis for the website meant that I didn’t have to spend countless hours coding. Instead, had a good foundation to customise.

Working with the theme developers I was able to build an online store with all the functionality I needed. Going live with the website December 2018.
